THE POTTERY PROCESS

Ella’s Pottery is all thrown on a foot-powered kick wheel. They fire 1-2 times a year in a wood-fired anagama kiln in Surry, Maine.

Ella helped build the kiln in 2021 and has been a member of the crew since.

Each firing is about a one month process and is completed by a full crew of 3 to 4 potters as well as guest artists.

First everyone glazes their pots. Then the kiln is loaded over four days. The way in which the kiln is loaded will impact the final pots.

During the loading, each individual pot must be wadded to prevent sticking to the shelves. After loading, the kiln is preheated and then actively fired for four to five days. The fire is kept burning 24 hours a day, with each potter taking 4-6 hour shifts. The goal is to reach 2350 degrees F (cone 10). Cone 10 results can also be achieved by reaching a slightly lower temperature and sustaining it for a longer time.

At the end of the firing, the kiln is sealed up and we wait a week for the kiln to cool down. And then we can finally see our pots — after we shovel all the ash away from the firebox!

Ella draws inspiration from forms they love in nature. Their favorite pots to make currently are their mushroom-inspired incense burners.
